Bad news for Warriors fans: Klay Thompson reunion isn't happening this offseason

Klay Thompson to the Warriors? Not so fast. CBA rules and Dallas' cap situation make a reunion nearly impossible until at least 2027.

Bad news for Warriors fans: Klay Thompson reunion isn't happening this offseason

Warriors fans, don't get your hopes up just yet

It's been a quiet, almost frustratingly uneventful offseason for the Golden State Warriors. The biggest moves so far? Re-signing Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis  hardly the splash many fans were hoping for after a 37-win season that ended in a play-in exit for the second time in three years. So naturally, whispers about a possible reunion with franchise legend Klay Thompson have started making the rounds again. Turns out, though, the timing just isn't right.

Thompson, now with the Dallas Mavericks after leaving Golden State in 2024, has publicly kept the door open, calling a return "never say never." But according to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, the math simply doesn't work for the Warriors right now.

Why the CBA is blocking a Klay-Warriors reunion

The core issue isn't desire  it's the collective bargaining agreement. Golden State is currently operating as a first or second apron team, which severely restricts how they can add talent, especially through a contract buyout.

"A reunion between Klay and the Warriors could only happen if he were to become a free agent, and that's not by way of buyout. We're talking next offseason, next summer, where the Warriors aren't a first apron team or a second apron team. If he gets bought out of his contract now, the Warriors cannot sign him due to the CBA rules," Siegel explained on ClutchPoints' X account.

In other words, even if Dallas were to release Thompson via buyout this summer, Golden State's hands would be tied. Apron-restricted teams can't just scoop up bought-out veterans the way they used to — a rule change that's clearly complicating what would otherwise be a feel-good storyline.

Klay's value hasn't disappeared and other teams have noticed

Thompson isn't the same explosive scorer who helped Golden State win four championships alongside Stephen Curry, but he's still one of the better movement shooters in the league and can chip in with secondary playmaking on the wing. That's exactly why, if he does get bought out, he won't lack for suitors.

  • The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly monitoring his situation.
  • The Miami Heat are also said to be keeping tabs on a potential buyout.
  • Golden State remains interested, but only under a full free-agency scenario — not this offseason.

What this means for Golden State moving forward

For now, the Warriors are largely stuck running back the same roster that struggled to find consistency last season. Their real flexibility — and realistic shot at bringing Thompson home likely won't arrive until the summer of 2027, when the front office expects to have significantly more cap room to work with.

It's a tough pill for Bay Area fans who were hoping to see one more chapter of the Curry-Thompson partnership sooner rather than later. But given the current roster construction and apron restrictions, patience appears to be the only real option on the table.

The door isn't closed  just not open yet

Klay Thompson's Warriors homecoming might not be a this-summer story, but it's far from dead. Keep an eye on how his role in Dallas evolves and mark 2027 on the calendar as the year this reunion talk could finally become reality.
