Jaylen Brown throws emotional Boston farewell bash ahead of 76ers debut
Jaylen Brown said goodbye to Celtics fans at a Boston Common block party after his blockbuster trade to Philadelphia sent Paul George and picks to Boston.

One last goodbye at Boston Common
Thousands packed downtown Boston on Sunday afternoon for Jaylen Brown's "741 Frequency Fest" block party, a farewell celebration marking the end of his 10-season run with the Celtics. It was his final send-off before officially suiting up for the Philadelphia 76ers alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and LeBron James this fall.
"Listen, I'm at a loss for words," Brown told the crowd. "When I got to this city, I said I'm going to go to war for this city. I met so many great people here. People that helped me in the community, that motivated me on my journey. People that have supported me even when I didn't support myself at times." He closed with a simple message: "I just want to say thank you to Boston, thank you to the city, and I love you." Brown wore his 2024 championship ring throughout the event.
The trade that ended an era
The offseason blockbuster sent Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George and multiple draft picks, a move that closed the chapter on Brown's decade alongside Jayson Tatum — a partnership that produced the franchise's record 18th championship banner in 2024. Boston is now leaning on George and newly acquired veteran Mike Conley as it retools around Tatum for the post-Brown era.
Celtics president Brad Stevens called it one of the hardest decisions of his tenure, admitting he once had to ask Philadelphia point blank: "What are you offering?" before the framework of the deal came together.
A decade that redefined Brown's legacy
Brown's journey in Boston began with a mixed reception on draft night cheers and boos in equal measure — and ended with him as the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and Eastern Conference Finals MVP. Along the way he battled through 119 playoff games, signed a landmark $304 million contract extension in 2023, and just delivered the best statistical season of his career in 2025-26, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
- 10 seasons with the Celtics, ending with a title in 2024
- 119 career playoff games in a Celtics uniform
- $304 million extension signed in 2023
- 2025-26 season: 28.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 5.1 APG — a career-best year
- Finals MVP and Eastern Conference Finals MVP honors in 2024
Off the court, Brown became known for community work throughout Boston's inner-city neighborhoods, regularly visiting schools in Dorchester and Roxbury. He's credited that commitment to lessons instilled by his mother, Mechalle Brown, and his late grandmother, Dianne Varnado, who passed away in 2023.
Inside the Celtics locker room
Teammates have downplayed any notion that friction pushed Brown out the door. Nikola Vucevic said he never noticed chemistry issues or tension building inside the locker room. Payton Pritchard, who spent six seasons alongside Brown, called him a mentor and a friend, admitting he felt the loss deeply but wasn't shocked once the trade materialized.
One detail has stood out since the deal went down: Brown and Jayson Tatum, the two faces of Boston's championship core, reportedly haven't spoken since the trade was finalized — a quiet coda to one of the more successful duos in recent Celtics history.
A city shows up to say goodbye
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu joined the celebration and presented Brown with a ceremonial "Jaylen Brown Way" street sign. Rapper A$AP Ferg took the stage to perform "Just Do It," the debut single he and Brown released together in 2024, while Joyner Lucas and Lil Baby also made appearances. Food trucks, a 741 Performance pop-up shop, and a massive "Thank You, Jaylen" banner covered in fan messages rounded out the scene.
In one of the day's most viral moments, Brown reunited with Gio, a six-year-old fan whose tearful reaction to the trade news went viral earlier this year, racking up nearly 10 million views on Instagram. Brown has also made his intentions for Philadelphia clear, declaring on a livestream, "I want blood," as he gears up for his first season alongside Embiid and Maxey.
What comes next
Brown now walks into a loaded Philadelphia roster with title expectations of its own, while Boston pivots toward a George-Tatum-Conley core built to keep the Celtics competitive in a shifting East. Both sides are betting big on this reshuffle — and the first time Brown steps back into TD Garden wearing Sixers colors will say a lot about how each move plays out.
