Jaylen Brown throws epic farewell block party for Celtics fans before Sixers era begins

A block party that brought Boston Common to a standstill

Hundreds of Celtics fans flooded Boston Common on Sunday, not for a championship parade this time, but to say goodbye. Jaylen Brown, recently traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, returned to the city he called home for a decade to throw himself a farewell block party his own way of closing the book on his Celtics chapter.

The event felt more like a neighborhood celebration than a formal send-off. There were back-to-school giveaways, games, food trucks, and live music. But the real moment came when Brown grabbed the mic.

"I'm so grateful that there's so many people here showing us love. Just know the feeling is mutual," Brown told the crowd. "Boston, I love you. I f—k with you. Boston, thank you."

Trophies, autographs, and a street named in his honor

Brown didn't come empty-handed. He brought along the 2024 NBA championship trophy and his Finals MVP trophy for fans to see up close, then spent time working through the crowd signing autographs one by one.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu made an appearance too, presenting Brown with something that will outlast any highlight reel — his very own street sign, officially dubbed "Jaylen Brown Way."

It was a fitting cap to a night that felt less like a business goodbye and more like a genuine thank-you between a franchise player and the fanbase that grew up watching him.

The trade that ended an era in Boston

Brown's move to Philadelphia came together in July, after the 76ers' pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo fell through. Philadelphia instead pivoted to Boston, sending Paul George, two first-round draft picks, and two second-round picks to the Celtics in exchange for Brown.

For Boston, the deal marked the start of a broader roster shake-up. Along with George, the Celtics also brought in veteran guard Mike Conley as part of a wider restructuring effort following their 2024 title run.

Ten seasons, five All-Star nods, and one championship

Drafted third overall by Boston in 2016, Brown spent all ten of his NBA seasons in a Celtics uniform, averaging 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game across that stretch. He earned five All-Star selections and was named second-team All-NBA twice.

His best individual season came in 2025-26, right before the trade, when he posted career-high numbers of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. Brown also carries the distinction of being both Eastern Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP from Boston's 2024 title run alongside Jayson Tatum.

Off the court, Brown made his mark on the city beyond basketball. When he signed his $304 million extension with the Celtics in 2023, he made a public commitment to bring "Black Wall Street" initiatives to Boston and work to close the racial wealth gap.

Locker room reaction: no drama, just a hard business call

Reports of tension between Brown and Tatum have circulated since the trade, and teammates were quick to weigh in. Big man Nikola Vucevic said he never noticed any chemistry issues or signs of conflict between the two stars during their time together.

Notably, Brown and Tatum reportedly haven't spoken since the deal went down though that's been framed more as the awkward silence of a business split than any bitter falling-out.

Guard Payton Pritchard, who played alongside Brown for six seasons, called him a mentor and a friend. Pritchard admitted the trade left him feeling a real sense of loss, even if it wasn't exactly a shock given how the offseason had been trending.

Celtics president Brad Stevens didn't sugarcoat how tough the call was, revealing he simply asked Philadelphia one direct question: "What do you guys have to offer?" That conversation ultimately set the George-for-Brown swap in motion.

One more goodbye and a promise for what's next

Beyond the block party, Brown also thanked fans at the 741 Frequency Fest in Boston, making his farewell tour feel like more than just a single event. In a livestream discussing his new chapter in Philadelphia, Brown made his intentions clear, saying simply: "I want blood."

Amid all the goodbyes, one moment stood out as pure heart: Brown reunited with Gio, a 6-year-old fan whose emotional reaction to the trade he was seen crying on camera went viral earlier in the offseason. The follow-up video of Brown meeting Gio in person has since racked up nearly 10 million views on Instagram.
